A Guide to the US ESTA for British Citizens
Applying for a US ESTA is a relatively painless rite of passage for UK travellers, provided you use the official site and don't have a colourful history with the law.
For most British citizens, the gateway to the United States isn't a complex visa interview, but a digital form known as the ESTA. While the process is generally straightforward, US authorities enforce their entry rules with a level of strictness that makes a primary school headteacher look relaxed.
Who needs an ESTA
If you hold a full "British citizen" passport and are heading to the US for tourism or basic business (like attending a meeting), you need an ESTA. This also applies if you are arriving by land or sea. It allows you to stay for up to 90 days, but remember: an approved ESTA is an "authorisation to travel," not a guaranteed ticket into the country. The final decision always rests with the Customs and Border Protection officer at the airport.
Who cannot use an ESTA
Not everyone is eligible for the Visa Waiver Program. You will likely need to apply for a full US visa if you:
- Have been arrested, even if it didn't lead to a conviction.
- Have a criminal record.
- Have been previously refused entry to or deported from the US.
- Have stayed longer than allowed on a previous visit.
Additional restrictions apply if you have visited certain countries. You generally cannot use an ESTA if you have been in Iran, Iraq, Libya, North Korea, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, or Yemen since March 2011, or Cuba on or after 12 January 2021.
How much is an ESTA?
The official price is $21 USD. This covers a $4 processing fee and a $17 authorisation fee. Payment is required at the time of application via credit card, debit card, or PayPal. If a website asks for £80 or more, you have accidentally wandered onto a "third-party" site that charges a massive premium for doing exactly what you could do yourself in ten minutes.
How to apply: official channels only
The official ESTA application website is esta.cbp.dhs.gov. It is not trying to win any design awards, but it is the only place to get the real deal. You can also use the official "ESTA Mobile" app on iOS or Android. You will need to upload a photo of your passport and a selfie. Ensure the selfie is clear; if your existing ESTA lacks this photo, you might find yourself needing to apply for a new one.
How long does an ESTA take and how long does it last?
Most applications are approved within minutes, but "minutes" can occasionally stretch into "days." US authorities recommend applying at least 72 hours before departure. Once approved, an ESTA lasts for two years. However, if your passport expires during that time, your ESTA expires with it. You also need a new one if you change your name, gender, or citizenship.
What to do if your ESTA is denied or pending
If your status is "Pending," do not panic. It simply means they are doing a manual check. If it is Denied, you cannot fly under the Visa Waiver Program. You must instead book an appointment at the US Embassy in London or the Consulate in Belfast for a visa. Be warned: visa appointments are currently limited and require significant lead time.
ESTA for children
Every traveller needs their own authorisation, regardless of age. This means children and infants must have their own ESTA. If a minor is travelling alone or with only one parent, it is highly recommended to carry a notarised letter of consent from the non-travelling parent(s) to avoid awkward questions at the border.
The transit trap
If you are flying from London to Mexico and changing planes in New York, you still need an ESTA. The US does not have "airside transit" in the way many other countries do. You will clear immigration, and to do that, you need your paperwork in order.
Common mistakes
- Mistyping your passport number: entering the letter O instead of the number 0 is a classic.
- Using the wrong passport: only a full British Citizen passport is normally eligible for ESTA.
- Waiting until the last minute: apply at least 72 hours before departure, ideally earlier.
- Using a copycat site: if you are charged more than $21, you are on the wrong website.
Bottom line
Apply early, use the official esta.cbp.dhs.gov website, and be honest. The ESTA is a digital gatekeeper — it's firm, but fair, provided you follow the instructions to the letter.
