The Visa Panic Index

A simple 1–5 scale that says how much paperwork, time, and pure admin trauma a country's entry process actually costs you. We use this scale on every destination page and every blog ranking.

1

Calm

You're fine. Show up with your passport, smile at the border guard, in you go.

Typical examples: Ireland, most short trips to Europe (pre-ETIAS), Caribbean visa-free destinations.

2

Tiny form, tiny rage

Quick online form or arrival card. A small fee. A small sigh. Done.

Typical examples: USA (ESTA), Canada (eTA), Australia (ETA), New Zealand (NZeTA), ETIAS (from late 2026).

3

eVisa, annoying but survivable

A longer online form. Passport photo to spec. A wait. A receipt to print. Manageable.

Typical examples: India, Vietnam, Turkey, Sri Lanka, Kenya, Egypt.

4

Embassy appointment. Cancel your personality.

Full visa application, in-person appointment, biometrics, supporting documents. Plan ahead.

Typical examples: China, Russia (where permitted), Nigeria, some Saudi Arabia categories.

5

Letter of invitation, blood oath, three PDFs named final_FINAL_v7

Sponsor letter, approved itinerary, multiple embassy visits, weeks of waiting, no guarantee.

Typical examples: Turkmenistan, North Korea (tour-only), Iran, Chad, Equatorial Guinea.

How we score

We look at: application type (no-form, online form, embassy appointment), required documents, typical processing time, fee ranges, and how forgiving the process is if you make a mistake. Travel advisories don't change the score — they're a separate thing to check before any trip.

Every destination page shows the score. Try Japan, India, or browse our ranking of the hardest visas for UK passport holders.
