Ghana Panic Index: visa, yellow fever, and an eight-week runway
Visa in advance, yellow fever certificate on arrival, malaria tablets in your bag. Ghana isn't hard — it just needs eight weeks of runway.
Ghana is one of the more paperwork-heavy trips a UK or US passport holder will take in West Africa. There's a full visa to arrange in advance, a yellow fever certificate you can't board without, and enough small documents to fill an entire envelope. It's a solid 4-out-of-5 panic — not because Ghana is hard, but because everything has to be organised weeks before you fly.
Do I need a visa for Ghana?
UK British Citizen passport holders: yes. You need a full visa, arranged in advance, before you fly.
US passport holders: yes. Ghana requires a visa for US citizens for tourism — apply before travel.
For the current requirements, fees, and last-checked date, see the Ghana page for UK passports or the US passports version.
What makes it a 4 out of 5
1. The visa itself
Applied for through the Ghana High Commission (UK) or Ghana Embassy (US), or via authorised visa application centres. Expect to submit your passport, forms, photos, proof of accommodation, an invitation or hotel booking, and a fee. Processing typically runs a couple of weeks — start early.
2. Yellow fever vaccination
Book this with a travel clinic (NHS or private in the UK, a travel clinic or public health department in the US). You'll be issued a physical yellow card that becomes part of your travel documents for life — don't lose it. The vaccine is a live one, so if you're immunocompromised or pregnant, talk to a travel doctor first.
3. Other health prep
Malaria prophylaxis is standard advice for Ghana. Hepatitis A, typhoid, and tetanus/diphtheria/polio boosters are commonly recommended. Rabies and Hep B depending on your itinerary. This is a proper travel-clinic appointment, not a corner-shop errand.
4. Passport validity + onward ticket
Six months of passport validity beyond entry, plus a confirmed return or onward ticket. Both are checked at the airline desk.
Timeline: don't wing it
A realistic Ghana trip needs about 8 weeks of runway from the moment you commit:
- Week 1: book yellow fever + malaria consult, order passport photos, start visa forms
- Week 2: receive yellow card (must be issued ≥10 days before arrival), submit visa application
- Weeks 3–5: visa processing (bank on 2–4 weeks)
- Weeks 6–8: passport back, malaria tablets started per your clinic's schedule, final check of the FCDO / State Department advice
Before you fly
- Passport valid ≥6 months beyond entry
- Ghana visa physically in the passport (or e-Visa printed)
- Yellow fever "yellow card", issued ≥10 days before arrival
- Confirmed onward or return ticket
- Proof of accommodation for first nights
- Check current gov.uk travel advice (UK) or the US State Department page
The verdict
A 4/5. Ghana isn't difficult, but it's the single most document-heavy trip most UK and US travellers will do in a given year. Start the yellow fever appointment and the visa on the same day, and everything else falls into place. Leave it to the fortnight before you fly and you will not be going to Ghana.
