Can I go to Ukraine? No visa, no flights, still a lot of travellers ask
The visa is not the obstacle. There aren't any commercial flights and both governments say don't go. Here's who is actually travelling to Ukraine in 2026.
There is still real search demand for "do I need a visa for Ukraine". The visa answer is straightforward — UK and US passport holders don't. The bigger question — can you actually go, and should you — is a very different one in 2026.
The short version
- Visa: Not required for UK or US passport holders for short tourism. 90 days visa-free in any 180-day period.
- Advisory: "Do not travel" from both governments for the whole country.
- Flights: Ukrainian airspace has been closed to commercial traffic since 2022. Entry is by land only, typically via Poland.
- Insurance: Standard travel policies do not cover Ukraine. Specialist conflict-zone insurance exists but is expensive and heavily restricted.

Who is actually going
Since 2022 the traveller mix has been narrow and specific:
- Journalists on assignment, usually with fixers and body armour
- Humanitarian workers deployed through registered NGOs
- Volunteers with established programmes doing frontline aid
- Dual nationals visiting family, often via land from Poland
- Government personnel and diplomatic missions
Tourism as most people understand it — city breaks, weekend trips, summer holidays — has effectively stopped. Kyiv is functioning, but it is a city at war. Air-raid alerts, curfews, and safety infrastructure are part of daily life.
Why the visa side is a footnote
Ukraine's short-stay visa waiver for UK and US passport holders pre-dates the current conflict and has not been withdrawn. Legally, both governments could enter tomorrow with just a passport and a return plan. This is worth stating clearly because "no visa" sometimes gets confused with "safe to visit", and they are not the same thing.

- Read the live FCDO / State Department advisory the week you travel
- Register with STEP (US) or with your embassy for consular contact
- Buy specialist conflict-zone insurance — read the exclusions carefully
- Plan land entry and exit routes with backup options
- Passport valid ≥6 months beyond planned entry
- Working phone with roaming or a local SIM, and offline maps of your route
- Cash reserves — card networks work in cities but not always in transit
The verdict
"Do I need a visa for Ukraine?" — no. "Can I go to Ukraine?" — yes, legally. "Should I go to Ukraine as a tourist in 2026?" — both the UK and US governments currently say no, and standard travel insurance policies agree. That's the honest picture.
