US passport holders need a Bhutan visa approved before travel. Bhutan's official tourism site says you can apply online yourself at immi.gov.bt or have a tour operator or hotel apply, and you can book independently — a licensed operator is not mandatory. Bhutan's official FAQ says a guide is mandatory at all times in Bhutan, including for land-border travellers going beyond the border towns. It separately requires a guide when driving your own car, and says all treks must be undertaken with an accredited tour operator or guide. Independent booking does not mean unguided touring. The visa has a one-off, non-refundable USD 40 application fee, separate from the Sustainable Development Fee (USD 100 per adult per night per Bhutan's FAQ). Your passport needs six months' validity after arrival.

• Return-ticket and arrival-form requirements were not confirmed.
